Mesothelioma is a deadly cancer with only one known cause: asbestos. Michigan ranks 9th in the nation for mesothelioma deaths. One thousand one hundred and thirty-two of the 29,804 people who died from mesothelioma between 1999 and 2010 were Michigan residents.

Workers inhaling or injesting asbestos dust was the first step the fibers took in the development of mesothelioma. Arriving in the lungs or abdomen, the fine, needle-like fibers work their way to the thin membrane that lines these organs, the mesothelium.

For many Michigan workers the simple act of eating lunch surrounded by the asbestos products they were cutting and sanding was an every day occurance.

Malignant Mesothelioma in Michigan's Counties

Often raw numbers don't give the complete picture. Statisticians use "age-adjusted death rates" to take into account the average age of all residents and get a clearer picture of how a disease like mesothelioma is affecting a population.

For instance, a county or state with an older average age is naturally going to see a greater total number of deaths than an area with a younger average age. Taking such variations into account, the following Michigan counties have a higher than expected rate of malignant mesothelioma deaths (only Michigan counties with at least 10 mesothelioma deaths are included):

Types of Mesothelioma

Malignant pleural mesothelioma, often confused with lung cancer, develops in the lining of the lungs. Pleural mesothelioma is the most common type followed by peritoneal mesothelioma.

Peritoneal, or abdomincal mesotheliomas arise from the lining of the abdominal cavity. A small fraction of mesotheliomas develop in the lining of the heart (pericardial) or reproductive organs.
